Teniya Coast: the basics

Teniya Coast is not a managed swimming beach, so there are no lifeguards and no safety net to keep box jellyfish out.

There are no restrooms, showers, shops or vending machines either, so bring drinks and anything else you need with you.

What you find at Teniya Coast is nothing like the white sand beaches Okinawa is known for.

Large stones lie scattered across the shore, and the landscape has been left entirely as nature made it.

The water at Teniya Coast stays shallow a long way out, and at low tide you can walk all the way to what looks like a small island offshore.

The strata are only visible when the tide is out, so check the time of low tide before setting off to see them.

Teniya Coast is covered in stones and rock, and any stone with green moss on it is extremely slippery.

An ocean view opens up directly in front of the store, and plenty of families and visitors were enjoying an unhurried break there.

21st Century Forest Beach lies just across the footpath.

Starbucks has both indoor and outdoor seating, and the outdoor seats come with gazebos and shade from the trees — it looked a very comfortable place to sit.

Exceptionally clear water

The water here is clear and lovely.

When we visited the waves were gentle, and our impression was of a beach well suited to swimming.

A long, beautiful stretch of sand

21st Century Forest Beach has sand on both sides of the promenade that runs through it.

The left-hand beach has a jellyfish net and lifeguards on duty.

Marine activities are provided for as well, and the whole area was beautifully kept.

Kise Beach, Kouki Beach and Nago Citizen Beach all run into one another, and while we could not make out a clear boundary, the long, clean sweep of sand is a real draw.

Seen with your own eyes, it is far lovelier than any photograph suggests.

The naturally formed rocks are what make this beach distinctive.

Trees grow on top of the boulders — a kind of rock formation we had not come across before.

Their scale is hard to judge from photographs, but they felt to us to be around 10 m.

Seen in person, the sheer size of them is genuinely surprising.

The water was clear and lovely.

The sand runs for roughly 500 m and is beautifully clean.

Untouched nature all around

The area around the beach is full of natural landscape.

These great natural boulders are unlike anything we have seen on Okinawa’s west coast.

Walking from the parking lot down to the beach, you pass along a small path through what feels like a wood.

A lovely approach

The entrance to Sedake Beach is surrounded by trees, and once you are through the path a beautiful beach opens up.

There were no showers, so anyone planning to swim should check in advance.
