Ogimi Village sits in the north of Okinawa’s main island at the gateway to the Yanbaru region, a village known for its longevity and ringed by green hills and quiet sea.

There are no resort beaches crowded with tourists here, but that is exactly why you can take your time on shores that remain much as nature left them — and that is the appeal of Ogimi.

From a coast with roughly a kilometre of sand, to a shore where you can camp for free, to a seaside park with a full playground, each place has a character of its own.

Here are the four beaches and coasts of Ogimi Village.

Nerome Coast

Yuinohama Coast

Tsuha Coast

Shioya Beach

Those are the four beaches and coasts.

Known for roughly a kilometre of beautiful sand and wonderfully clear water, it is the prettiest stretch of sea in the village.

There are hardly ever any tourists, so it suits anyone who wants to spend an unhurried afternoon by the shore.

Nearby is the Ogimi Village Rural Revitalisation Center (the former Michi-no-Eki Ogimi), which has a restaurant and souvenir shops.

It is not a managed swimming beach, so there are no lifeguards and no jellyfish net. Please take real care if you go into the water.

This article introduced the beaches and coasts of Ogimi Village.

Ogimi Village has no swimming beaches with full facilities, but that is precisely why its quiet, unspoilt shores remain.

If you are choosing on the beauty of the sea, Nerome Coast, with its kilometre of sand and clear water, is the one.

With children along, or for a break on a drive, Yuinohama Coast and its playground and restrooms is the easiest stop.

For camping, Tsuha Coast right across from the Michi-no-Eki; for kayaking and SUP, the calm water of Shioya Beach.

None of them is a managed swimming beach, so please take real care if you go into the water.

On your next trip to Yanbaru, do make time for the coasts of Ogimi Village.

Tsuha Coast is known as a place where you can camp free of charge.

There is no caretaker, so no booking or application is needed and you can come and go freely.

You can park right beside your pitch, which makes hauling gear easy even on a heavily loaded camping trip.

It is not a laid-out campground, though, so use it at your own risk.

The Michi-no-Eki is right across the road, so facilities are never a problem

The great strength of Tsuha Coast is that the Michi-no-Eki Ogimi Yanbaru Forest Visitor Center is right across from it.

Along with restrooms, the Michi-no-Eki has coin showers, vending machines, a farm shop, a restaurant, and even bicycle rental.

There is also a convenience store about two minutes’ walk away, so stocking up is easy.

A bare coast where you still want for nothing — it is an unusual combination.

Well suited to SUP and kayaking

Tsuha Coast faces Shioya Bay, and the water is relatively calm.

That makes it better suited to paddling activities such as SUP and kayaking than to swimming.

The Michi-no-Eki also takes bookings for activities, so it is worth asking about tours there.

If any of that appeals, take a look on Viator or GetYourGuide.

The ground at Tsuha Coast is less fine sand than a mix of pebbles and broken coral.

It hurts to walk on barefoot, so it is worth bringing water shoes or sandals.

When pitching a tent, check the ground before you set up.

Points to note

Tsuha Coast is a designated conservation area, so please do not light fires on the ground. If you want a fire, use a fire pit stand and take the ash home with you.

There is nowhere to dispose of rubbish. Please take everything you bring out home with you. There is no water supply or cooking area either, so washing-up has to go home too.

The currents run fast and the water is not suited to swimming. With no lifeguards and no jellyfish net, please do not come here to swim.

Getting to the Michi-no-Eki means crossing National Route 58. Traffic is heavy and some cars move fast, so take real care when you cross.

The entrance to the coast is narrow, barely wide enough for a larger vehicle. Drive carefully.

Tsuha Coast is on National Route 58, across from the Michi-no-Eki Ogimi Yanbaru Forest Visitor Center (95 Tsuha, Ogimi Village).

If you are using a car navigation system, set that Michi-no-Eki as your destination and you will not get lost.

There is space on the coast side to park right beside your pitch, but the entrance is small and narrow, so take care if you are driving a larger vehicle.

Shioya Beach sits inside Shioya Bay, an inlet ringed by green hills.

Because it lies within the bay, waves from the open sea rarely reach it and the surface stays very calm.

With its calm water, Shioya Bay is an excellent place to try kayaking and SUP.

Kayak tours that paddle around the bay are also run, and first-timers can join with a guide.

Booking a tour sometimes gets you the use of a shower, so it is worth checking in advance.

For sightseeing on Okinawa’s main island, a rental car is by far the best option.

Shuri Castle in Naha, the beautiful beaches up north, American Village in Chatan – the places worth seeing are scattered across the island, and having a car lets you explore at your own pace. Buses are infrequent and rarely run on time, so having a car makes a real difference to the trip.

This article introduced Shioya Beach.

Shioya Beach is a natural beach inside Shioya Bay in Ogimi Village, where the water stays remarkably calm.

With free parking for 50 cars and a spot right on National Route 58, it is an easy place to stop on a drive.

It suits kayaking and SUP more than swimming, so take the chance to spend some time out on the water amid the quiet scenery of Yanbaru.

On your next trip to Ogimi Village, do pay Shioya Beach a visit.

Roughly a kilometer of beautiful sand and exceptionally clear water are what make this beach so appealing.

You will hardly see another visitor at Nerome Coast, which makes it a good choice for unhurried time along the shore.

Nearby is the Ogimi Village Rural Revitalization Center (formerly Michi-no-Eki Ogimi), which has a few restaurants and souvenir shops.

A rental car is by far the best way to get around Okinawa’s main island.

Shuri Castle in Naha, the beautiful beaches of the north, American Village in Chatan — the places worth seeing are spread across the island, so having a car lets you explore at your own pace. Buses are infrequent and do not always run to time, so a car makes a real difference to how much you can fit in.

Cars fill up quickly in the peak season, so we recommend booking early once your travel dates are set. One important note for overseas visitors: to drive in Japan you must obtain an International Driving Permit (Geneva Convention) in your home country before you depart, and remember that traffic in Japan drives on the left.
