Yamabare Coast (Crystal Beach) is a stretch of shore on Ishigaki Island, one of Okinawa’s outlying islands.
It lies near the village of Yamabare in the Kabira district of northwestern Ishigaki Island, an untouched coastline spreading out at the mouth of the Yamabare River.
Natural quartz washed down the Yamabare River from Mt. Omoto — the highest peak in Okinawa Prefecture — turns up in the sand here, which is how it earned the nickname Crystal Beach.
Rip currents form easily here, though, and it is not a coast suited to swimming — so come for the scenery and the quartz hunting rather than to get in the water.

Yamabare Coast is not a managed beach, so there are no lifeguards and no safety net (a net to keep box jellyfish out).
There are no restrooms, showers, shops or vending machines either, so bring drinks and anything else you need with you.

Natural quartz crystals in the sand
Yamabare Coast is called Crystal Beach because you can find natural quartz in the sand.
Mt. Omoto, the highest peak in Okinawa Prefecture, is made of granite; the quartz within it weathers out, washes into the Yamabare River and is carried down to this coast at the river mouth.
Look closely at the sand along the waterline, or where the river runs into the sea, and you will see tiny clear grains glinting in the light.
Note that parts of this area are under environmental protection. Follow any signs or instructions on site, and take care not to disturb the natural environment.
An off-the-beaten-track snorkeling spot
The water at Yamabare Coast is very clear, with coral reef spreading out offshore.
Even just looking from the shore, you can clearly make out the shifts in colour across the shallows and where the coral lies.
It is well known as a snorkeling spot.
A quiet coast with no tourist development
Yamabare Coast has not been developed for tourism, so hardly anyone comes here.
There is no shop and no car park — but in exchange, the natural landscape has been left entirely as it is.

There are no restrooms, showers, changing rooms or lockers.
It is not a swimming beach, so there is no equipment rental or shop either.
Points to Note
Yamabare Coast is known for rip currents — strong flows running from the shore out to sea — and swimmers have been swept out here.
There are no lifeguards and no safety net, and the water drops off suddenly in places, so please stay out of the sea.
The path down to the shore from the parking area is also steep, and it gets very slippery after rain or when fallen leaves are wet.
Wear proper walking shoes rather than sandals.

There is no dedicated car park at Yamabare Coast.
There is a public car park about a seven-minute walk away, so park there and walk in.
Some people do park on the road, but that risks trouble with local residents — please do not park on the street.

Rental Cars on Ishigaki Island
A rental car is by far the best way to get around Ishigaki Island.
Scenic spots such as Kabira Bay and Yonehara Beach are spread across the island, so having a car lets you explore at your own pace. Bus services on Ishigaki Island are infrequent, and a car makes a real difference to how much you can fit in.
Cars fill up quickly in the peak season, so we recommend booking early once your travel dates are set. One important note for overseas visitors: to drive in Japan you must obtain an International Driving Permit (Geneva Convention) in your home country before you depart, and remember that traffic in Japan drives on the left.

It is a high-end resort with spacious ocean-view rooms, a beautiful pool and what is effectively a private beach.
Kabira Bay
Kabira Bay is about 15 minutes by car from Yamabare Coast, and it is the scenic spot Ishigaki Island is best known for.
Swimming is off-limits there too, but a glass-bottom boat will show you the coral and tropical fish.
