Ishigaki Island Beaches
引用元:https://www.hirakubo-sb.com/

Hirakubo Sunset Beach is a beach on Ishigaki Island, one of Okinawa’s outlying islands.

It sits on the west side of the Hirakubo Peninsula, which stretches north from Ishigaki Island, and the water here is clear and shallow a long way out.

Entry, parking and the restrooms are all free, and there are showers, rental gear and even food trucks — so you can turn up empty-handed, which is the real appeal.

If you plan to swim or snorkel, take care when going into the water.

Highlights

A shallow bay you can take your time in

Source: https://www.hirakubo-sb.com/

The water at Hirakubo Sunset Beach stays shallow a long way out.

There are few spots where it suddenly drops off, so you can stand in the shallows and take your time — that is the character of this beach.

The water is clear, too, so you can snorkel around looking for fish.

Do wear water shoes, though, so you do not cut your feet on coral or rock.

Sunsets that live up to the name

Hirakubo Sunset Beach faces west from the Hirakubo Peninsula, so you get a head-on view of the sun dropping into the sea.

It is well away from town, so there are few lights around and you can watch the colours of the sky and sea change at your own pace.

Pairing it with a trip to Hirakubozaki and stopping by in the late afternoon works well.

Marine activities you can try

Hirakubo Sunset Beach offers marine activities including snorkeling tours, clear SUP, mangrove SUP and banana boat rides.

Each runs around 30 minutes, so you can pull in mid-drive and still fit one in — which is a nice touch.

Weather, tide and sea conditions can change or cancel what is on offer, so check with the staff on the day.

If any of that appeals, take a look on Viator or GetYourGuide.

Food trucks on site

Source: https://www.hirakubo-sb.com/

There are food trucks at Hirakubo Sunset Beach selling light meals and drinks.

You can eat taco rice, Ishigaki beef skewers, island yakisoba and other Okinawan dishes while looking out over the sea.

Northern Ishigaki has few places to eat, so somewhere to grab a meal is genuinely welcome.

The menu and prices may change with the season and what is in stock.

Free entry, parking and restrooms

There is no admission charge at Hirakubo Sunset Beach, and the parking and restrooms are free as well.

Parasols, beach beds and snorkel sets are available to rent, so even empty-handed you can still enjoy a day in the water.

Showers cost 1,000 yen per use and include one bath towel.

Check the rental line-up and prices on site.

Points to Note

There are no lifeguards at Hirakubo Sunset Beach, so do not push it into the water on windy days or when the swell is up.

There is no box jellyfish net either, so wearing a rash guard is a sensible precaution when swimming in summer.

This is also a natural stretch of sea, so there will be days when tide, wind or weather rule out swimming and snorkeling.

Nearby Information

Activities on Ishigaki Island

Ishigaki Island has a great deal to do.

Marine activities in particular are plentiful — snorkeling, diving, SUP, kayaking, and more.

If any of that appeals, take a look on Viator or GetYourGuide.

Rental Cars on Ishigaki Island

A rental car is by far the best way to get around Ishigaki Island.

Scenic spots such as Kabira Bay and Yonehara Beach are spread across the island, so having a car lets you explore at your own pace. Bus services on Ishigaki Island are infrequent, and a car makes a real difference to how much you can fit in.

Cars fill up quickly in the peak season, so we recommend booking early once your travel dates are set. One important note for overseas visitors: to drive in Japan you must obtain an International Driving Permit (Geneva Convention) in your home country before you depart, and remember that traffic in Japan drives on the left.

Hirakubozaki (Hirakubozaki Lighthouse)

Hirakubozaki (Hirakubozaki Lighthouse) is the northernmost cape on Ishigaki Island, a short drive north of Hirakubo Sunset Beach.

The white lighthouse against the blue sea makes for a striking contrast, and it is known as one of the finest viewpoints on Ishigaki Island.

Ishigaki Island Sunset Beach

On the same western side of the Hirakubo Peninsula there is another, quite separate beach with a very similar name: Ishigaki Island Sunset Beach.

That one is a paid swimming beach in the Kuura district, and it comes with lifeguards and a box jellyfish net.

If you would rather swim somewhere fully equipped, it is worth a look too.
