Review: Okiham Nakami-jiru | A Local Okinawan Dish

Okinawa souvenirs

Okiham Nakami-jiru is a retort-pouch food made and sold by Okinawa Ham Sogo Shokuhin Co., Ltd. in Yomitan Village, Okinawa.

You can buy it as a souvenir, and supermarkets in Okinawa sell it as an everyday retort-pouch food.

Nakami-jiru is a local Okinawan dish, often eaten with family and relatives at New Year and on celebratory occasions.

Nakami means pork offal: the stomach and intestines are simmered in bonito stock and seasoned with soy sauce and salt.

You add ginger and spring onion to the light broth before eating.

Some Okinawa soba restaurants also add soba noodles to nakami-jiru and serve it as nakami soba.

Think of nakami-jiru as Okinawa’s answer to the ozoni soup eaten on the mainland.
