Uku-no-hama is a beach on Miyagi Island, a small island in Uruma City in the central part of Okinawa’s main island.
It is an island, but a bridge connects it to the mainland, so you can simply drive there.
This is a natural beach where you can enjoy Okinawa at its wildest.
Lovely sand and beautifully clear water are the draw, and the surroundings remain untouched.
Nothing around the beach has been developed. You can drive in along a farm track, but the drive itself is hard going.
You may run into a handful of other visitors, but for the most part it is an empty, beautiful beach.

The water is wonderfully clear and very beautiful.
Miyagi, Ikei and Hamahiga islands in Uruma City have no shortage of lovely beaches, but the water here stands out even among them.

There are no restrooms or showers either.
The rocks are on another scale
There are several large rocks on the beach, and in person they are startlingly big.
Photos do not convey it, but many of them stand 7 to 10 metres high and the effect is quite something.
Greenery all around
Uku-no-hama is ringed by greenery, so it feels like a lovely beach tucked away in the middle of nature.

Uku-no-hama has no car park.
There is a gate on the way down to the beach, and most people parked on the road near it.

Kafuu Banta
Kafuu Banta means “cape of happiness” in the Okinawan dialect: kafuu is “happiness” and banta is “cliff” or “cape”.
Kafuu Banta is well known for its views, and lately plenty of visitors make the trip just to see them.
The surrounding area also has largely undeveloped spots such as Ikei Island and Hamahiga Island, with no shortage of beautiful places to take in Okinawa’s natural side.
It is about five minutes by car from Uku-no-hama.

A rental car is the way to go in Okinawa
A rental car is by far the best way to get around the main island of Okinawa.
Shuri Castle in Naha, the beautiful beaches up north, American Village in Chatan and the rest are scattered all over the island, so having a car lets you explore at your own pace. Buses are infrequent and rarely run to time, so whether or not you have a car makes a real difference to the trip.
