Sumuide Beach, on Yagaji Island in northern Nago, is a hidden gem that only those in the know tend to find.
Set a little away from the tourist trail, it opens out into glittering emerald water and white sand that seems to gently envelop everyone who comes.
The shallows run out gently and the water stays calm — a restorative spot we would recommend to families and couples alike.
Time seems to slow here. It is a beach where you can feel Okinawa’s natural character and its quiet.

The Highlights
Beautifully clear water

The appeal of Sumuide Beach lies in its beautifully clear water.
The colour shifts through the day and it photographs wonderfully. There is something restorative about a stretch of sea left this untouched.
Gentle shallows you can relax in

The water is calm and the shallows run far out, so families with young children can relax here.
It is clear enough to see your own feet, and in the shallows you can watch small fish and shells. Ideal for a day in the water with the family.
A quiet spot the tour buses have not found

There is none of the crowding of the better-known sights — a hidden place where time passes unhurried.
We recommend it for those moments when you want to hear the waves, feel the sea breeze and reset.
A fine setting for a picnic or a photo shoot

Between the white sand and the shade of the trees, you will occasionally spot people having a barbecue.
Easy to reach, as only Yagaji Island can be

It sits just across the Yagaji Bridge, which makes it an easy stop on a drive.
Combine it with Kouri Island or a look around central Nago and you have an ideal route for taking in the nature of northern Okinawa.

Nearby Information
Kouri Island

Kouri Island is about 10 minutes away from Sumuide Beach by car.
It draws large numbers of visitors each year, with plenty of beautiful beaches where you can take in Okinawa’s natural side.
Activities in Nago

Nago offers a wide range of marine activities.
You can book diving, snorkeling, SUP and more.
If diving or snorkeling appeals, why not take a look at what Nago has on offer?
A rental car is the way to see Okinawa

For getting around Okinawa’s main island, a rental car is by far the best option.
Shuri Castle in Naha, the beautiful beaches of the north, American Village in Chatan — the sights are scattered across the island, and with a car you can take them in at your own pace. Local buses are infrequent and rarely run to time, so having a car makes a real difference to the trip.
Cars fill up quickly in the peak season, so we recommend booking early once your travel dates are set. One important note for overseas visitors: to drive in Japan you must obtain an International Driving Permit (Geneva Convention) in your home country before you depart, and remember that traffic in Japan drives on the left.
Summary

Sumuide Beach is a place to feel the plain, unvarnished Okinawa — quite different from the showier sights.
Clear water, soft sand and a reassuring quiet gently loosen the knots for everyone who visits.
Why not stop by on a drive around Yagaji Island, let the sea views do their work, and spend an unhurried stretch of time that is yours alone?
