Kanucha Beach | A Resort Beach with Free Showers and Lockers, Plus Fees and Parking

Nago Beaches

Kanucha Beach is a beach in Abu, Nago, in the north of Okinawa Main Island.

It is a private beach on the grounds of the large Kanucha Resort, and what sets it apart is how well equipped it is, with free showers and lockers among other facilities.

Non-guests can use it too by paying a beach fee, which makes it a good stop on a drive along Nago’s east coast.

If you are going in the water, please take care of your safety.

What makes it worth a visit

Free showers and lockers

Showers and lockers at Kanucha Beach are free to use.

Towels can also be borrowed at the beach counter at no charge, so you can turn up with less to carry, which is a real plus.

Most of Okinawa’s natural beaches have no facilities at all, so this is somewhere you can get in the water even on a day with plans stacked up afterwards.

Lifeguards and a jellyfish net for peace of mind

Kanucha Beach has a managed swimming area with lifeguards and a box jellyfish net in place.

Small children can play safely here, which makes it a good pick for families.

Note that swimming outside the marked area is not allowed, so please follow the rules and enjoy your time.

Plenty of rental gear and activities

Rentals cover rings, beach mats, beach chairs, parasols, hammocks, and sand play sets.

There is a wide range of water sports too, including the Kanucha Aqua Park, a floating obstacle course out on the water.

If any of that appeals, take a look on Viator or GetYourGuide.

No snorkeling or fishing

Snorkeling and fishing are both prohibited at Kanucha Beach.

This is a beach for swimming inside a safely managed area, so if you want to look below the surface for fish, pick a different beach or join a snorkeling tour that takes a boat offshore.

Glitter-filled rings and balls are not allowed either, so keep that in mind.

Things to note

Because Kanucha Beach sits inside a resort, it cannot be used outside the swimming season.

Non-guests pay a beach fee, though in some cases booking a water sport waives it, so it is worth checking in advance.

The resort has its own rules on visitors with tattoos, so check the official site before you go.

Things to do in Nago

Water sports are hugely popular in Nago, from snorkeling and diving in the clear water to SUP.

There is plenty beyond water sports as well, so take a look on Viator or GetYourGuide.

A rental car is the way to go in Okinawa

A rental car is by far the best way to get around Okinawa Main Island.

Shuri Castle in Naha, the beautiful beaches of the north, American Village in Chatan and more are scattered across the island, and with a car you can take them at your own pace. Buses are infrequent and do not always run on time, so having a car or not makes a real difference to the trip.

Cars fill up quickly in the peak season, so we recommend booking early once your travel dates are set. One important note for overseas visitors: to drive in Japan you must obtain an International Driving Permit (Geneva Convention) in your home country before you depart, and remember that traffic in Japan drives on the left.

Kanucha Resort

Kanucha Beach sits inside the Kanucha Resort in Abu, Nago. Its grounds cover roughly 800,000 tsubo and hold eight hotel buildings along with the beach, pools, and a golf course.

Stay here and the beach, the water sports, and the golf are all on site. It is about 100 minutes by car from Naha Airport, which is a fair way, but that distance is exactly what keeps it quiet.

Rooms fill up early in peak season, so book as soon as your dates are set.
