The Features and Highlights of Nagama-hama
A long beach of pure-white powder sand stretching about 1 km

Nagama-hama, spreading across the west side of Kurima Island, is a beach where you can enjoy Okinawa’s original sea, with about 1 km of un-touristed sand.
The fine, pure-white sand feels wonderfully powdery underfoot, and the contrast of endless white sand and blue sea is spectacular. It’s the kind of remote-island view that makes you forget the time and keep walking.
A hidden-gem feel like a private beach

Usually almost deserted, Nagama-hama is known as an ultimate hidden beach where an especially blue, clear sea spreads out before you.
Sit on the sand and all you’ll hear is the sound of the waves and wind — a luxurious calm. It’s perfect for anyone who wants to spend leisurely time all their own.
A snorkeling spot famous for the “Clownfish Mansion”

Just 2–3 m from the water’s edge, coral reefs spread out, and it’s a snorkeling gem with a spot called the Clownfish Mansion.
In the wonderfully clear sea, you can observe colorful tropical fish swimming among the coral up close. However, some areas have fast currents, so a life jacket or wetsuit is essential. Enjoy it with safety first.
You can also book snorkeling and more on Viator or GetYourGuide, so please take a look.
A breathtakingly beautiful famous spot for sunsets over the horizon

Because the whole beach faces the west coast, it’s also famous for sunsets, and on clear days the sunset is a breathtakingly wonderful sight.
As the sun goes down, it seems to melt into the sea, dyeing the blue sky and vast ocean deep red in a dramatic scene. After sunset it becomes completely dark, so bringing a flashlight is recommended.
Stunning scenery used as a filming location for movies and dramas

Nagama-hama has been used as a filming location for the movie “Kisarazu Cat’s Eye: Nippon Series” and the final scene of the last episode of the drama “TRICK 3.”
Beauty chosen for so many productions is something only those who visit can experience. Standing here, you also get the fun of realizing, “So that scene was filmed right here.”
Access and packing tips

About 11 km — roughly 20 minutes by car — from Miyako Airport. From Miyako Island, cross Kurima Ohashi Bridge, pass through the village, and continue along the farm road beyond.
With few signs, access is a little hard to find, so checking the location on a map beforehand is reassuring. There’s almost no shade, so don’t forget sun protection, drinks, and water shoes.

Summary

This time, we’ve introduced Kurima Island’s hidden beach “Nagama-hama.”
About 1 km of white-sand beach, snorkeling in wonderfully clear water, and a breathtakingly beautiful sunset. There are no restrooms or showers, but the greatest appeal of Nagama-hama is the “luxury of nothing” that more than makes up for it.
That said, since it’s a natural beach with no lifeguards, wear a life jacket when entering the sea, take ample care with the currents, and enjoy it at your own risk. Don’t forget sun protection, drinks, and water shoes, either.
When sightseeing on Miyako Island, be sure to cross Kurima Ohashi Bridge and make your way to Nagama-hama. Supreme island time, wrapped in untouched nature and silence, awaits you.
