Kudaka Island is an outlying island in Nanjo City, in the southern part of Okinawa’s main island.
Ferries run from the main island to Kudaka, taking about 25 minutes from Azama Port in Nanjo City to Tokujin Port on Kudaka Island.
Kudaka is also called the island of the gods: it is said to be where Amamikiyo, ancestor of the Ryukyuan creation, first came down to earth, and the island holds many sacred utaki and prayer sites.
There is not much here in the way of tourist facilities, but it is an island of beautiful sea where you can learn about Okinawan history and myth.
How to get to Kudaka Island
Getting to Kudaka Island is fairly straightforward.
Ferries to Kudaka Island run from Azama Port in Nanjo City on Okinawa’s main island.
The steps are as follows.
- Drive to Azama Port and park at the harbour
- Buy a ticket to Tokujin Port at Azama Port (a return ticket is easiest)
- Board the ferry

Here is how it went when we actually made the trip to Kudaka Island.
1. Arrive at Azama Port, park in the free car park, and buy tickets at the ferry ticket office.
2. Board the boat. There is both a high-speed boat and a regular ferry, and staff direct passengers before departure.
3. Arrive at Kudaka Island
That is all there is to getting to Kudaka Island.
After that, simply enjoy the island to the full.
Getting around Kudaka Island
There is no public transport on Kudaka Island – no buses, no taxis.
We recommend hiring a bicycle, an electric cart or a tuk-tuk to get around.
Bicycle hire
The main way to get around Kudaka Island is by rental bicycle.
When you arrive there are plenty of bicycle hire shops around the harbour, so you can rent one there.
Kudaka Island is about 8 kilometres around, and a full circuit takes roughly two hours by bicycle.
Electric carts and tuk-tuks are also available
Electric carts and tuk-tuks are another option for getting around.
Rates for electric carts and tuk-tuks are as follows.
– Electric tuk-tuk (seats 3): 4,500 yen for 1 hour, 6,000 yen for 2 hours
– Electric cart (seats 4): 10,000 yen for 2 hours

Kudaka Island is a sacred place in Okinawa and is regarded as holy ground.
