Tokeshi Beach (Tokeshi Coast) sits in Yomitan Village, in the central part of Okinawa’s main island.
It is known for its clear water, white sand and beautiful Ryukyu limestone.
It works almost as the private beach of Hoshinoya in Yomitan Village, with the resort built around the shore.
It is not a place that draws big crowds, which makes it a good choice if you want to take your time by the sea.

Tokeshi Beach has no safety net and no lifeguards, so if you want to swim or try water activities we recommend heading to Nirai Beach, which is properly equipped.
Nirai Beach is about 10 minutes on foot, or roughly a minute by car.
Highlights
Soft sand and blue water
The sand is white and soft, and as you can see the water is beautifully clear.
Beautiful Ryukyu limestone
There is no end of beautiful Ryukyu limestone here.
Photos make the height hard to judge, but the rocks stand around 5 metres tall.
There were also overhangs — not quite caves, but enough to throw some shade.
It really does leave you marvelling at the power of nature.
The quarry
Stone quarrying along this coast began around the end of the Taisho era, and the stone was used for house walls and for the screen walls, known as hinpun, that stand in front of entrances.

The Hoshino Resorts café is close by too, so you can take in the Okinawan sea view from there.
Greenery all around
The surroundings are lush and green, and between the beautiful sand, the blue water and the Ryukyu limestone there is plenty of nature to take in.

You can walk to Tokeshi Beach from Banta Café.
Since the shore is effectively Hoshinoya’s private beach, the walk takes about 10 minutes.

Hoshinoya Okinawa
It opened on 1 July 2020 under Hoshino Resorts’ Hoshinoya brand.
The concept is a gusuku residence, and the entrance is enclosed by a gusuku wall.
The buildings follow the coastline, so every room has an ocean view.
Hoshinoya also has an outdoor pool, making it a good choice for anyone who wants to feel Okinawa’s natural side.

A rental car is the way to go in Okinawa
For sightseeing on Okinawa’s main island, a rental car is by far the best option.
The places worth visiting are scattered across the island, from Shuri Castle in Naha to the beautiful beaches up north and American Village in Chatan, and with a car you can work through them at your own pace. Local buses are infrequent and rarely run to schedule, so having a rental car makes an enormous difference to how much you get out of the trip.
Cars fill up quickly in the peak season, so we recommend booking early once your travel dates are set. One important note for overseas visitors: to drive in Japan you must obtain an International Driving Permit (Geneva Convention) in your home country before you depart, and remember that traffic in Japan drives on the left.
