The Highlights

Shopping and cafés

American Village is the place for shopping and cafés in a stylish setting.

The atmosphere feels almost foreign, and it is a fine spot to slow down with a view of the sea.

Colorful tetrapods

The tetrapods here are colorful and rather stylish.

They come in three colors, pale blue, blue and grey, and the stretch is a well-known photo spot.

The colorful tetrapods run for about 500 metres and give the whole shoreline a certain style.

A beautiful sunset

The sunsets are beautiful, and as the sun starts to drop, people who have been out in American Village drift down to the shore.

Locals and visitors alike gather here, but there is plenty of seating so you can settle in and watch the evening sky.

The palm trees and tetrapods line up neatly, adding to the resort feel.

Clear blue water

The shoreline runs for about 500 metres, with beautiful blue water all along it.

It is built up with tetrapods and concrete, so there is no sand as on a normal beach, but the sea is lovely.

The floating adventure park is popular too

There is also a floating adventure park near American Village.

It is a place everyone from adults to children can enjoy.

American Village looks beautiful from the shore

After dark, the lights of American Village nearby make for a beautiful scene.

Around Mihama Coast

Activities in Chatan

Chatan offers a wide range of water sports.

You can book diving, snorkeling, SUP and more.

If you are interested in diving or snorkeling, why not take a look at what is on offer in Chatan?

Hilton Okinawa Chatan Resort

Hilton Okinawa Chatan Resort is a resort hotel where every room has an ocean view.

It has one of the largest pool complexes in the prefecture, with five pools indoors and out, including one with a water slide.

There is a fitness centre as well, available to guests.

It is a good choice if you want a resort stay in Okinawa.

A rental car is the way to go in Okinawa

A rental car is by far the best way to get around the main island of Okinawa.

The places worth seeing are scattered across the island, from Shuri Castle in Naha to the beautiful beaches of the north and American Village in Chatan, and with a car you can take them at your own pace. Buses are infrequent and do not always run on time, so having a car or not makes a real difference to the trip.

Cars fill up quickly in the peak season, so we recommend booking early once your travel dates are set. One important note for overseas visitors: to drive in Japan you must obtain an International Driving Permit (Geneva Convention) in your home country before you depart, and remember that traffic in Japan drives on the left.
